Tax Cuts / Fiscal Management

The Claverack Republican Team has led the way in Columbia County and delivered on tax cuts! The last five straight years we’ve cut town taxes!

The COVID-19 pandemic put significant financial stress on local governments, just as it did our families and businesses. However, thanks to strict financial oversight and fiscally conservative budgeting, the Town of Claverack went into the financial crisis in a much better financial position than many other local governments. That, coupled with strong budgetary management during the roughest period of the pandemic, allowed the Town of Claverack to weather the storm and enter 2021 in a stable cash position.

In fact, as many municipalities were forced to raise taxes in 2021 to cover shortfalls caused by the pandemic, we here in Claverack were able to cut taxes once again this year.

We are very proud to report that the Claverack Town Board approved a $2.76 million budget that provides a .19% tax decrease and is nearly $38,000 under the State tax cap. That is an amazing achievement and clear evidence that Claverack is Working!

Our focus on fiscally conservative budgeting and fiscal policy has allowed us to stay below the State Tax Cap each and every year, providing tax rebates to property owners and leading to a positive cash position for our town government.

This strong oversight of spending and budgeting is what saved the Town of Claverack from the financial calamity that many local governments faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and allowed us to avoid furloughs and layoffs!

The time for strong fiscal management isn’t when the crises strikes; it takes strong, smart management and oversight at all times to survive the hard times.
We’re proud to say that we provided that management and we weathered the pandemic financial crisis because of it!

Housing for Seniors and Families

The migration of high-income residents into our town over the past several years has benefited our local economy, but it has also caused property values and rent prices to rise to the point that local residents simply can’t afford housing anymore.
Picture
In 2016, a developer tried to bring housing to our town that would have provided seniors and families with an affordable community complex that included walking trails, playgrounds and other amenities with nearby retail services.

This plan was met with opposition from a group comprised largely of outside democrats that sought to keep the developer out and keep living expenses high.

We need affordable housing in Claverack. We need to provide for our community members and the generations of families that have called Claverack home.

It’s time to stop denying our local seniors and families the dignity of having a place of their own and we're fighting to keep people here, in their hometown.

New Town Hall and Community Complex

It's finally happening! Work has begun to build a brand new Town Hall and community complex.
Picture
The new building will include space for the Town Court, offices and a community room for local civic groups and organizations to hold meetings and functions.

Also being considered is a space for an emergency services substation that would allow on-duty police and EMS crews a place to work from, improving service and response to the Philmont and Mellenville communities.

The town is also investigating the feasibility of powering the new Town Hall complex using hydropower from the nearby Agawamuck Creek.

Preliminary plans include a partnership with the Claverack Library to provide space for the Town Court and other public functions, while construction of the new building is completed.

"I can't tell you how happy I am that we're finally able to get moving on this project," said Town Supervisor Kippy Weigelt. "It's been a long time coming and I'm happy that our plans are to keep it in the Philmont/Mellenville community," Kippy added.

Deputy Town Supervisor Stephen Hook credited the financial planning of this and past administrations for making the project possible. "Were it not for the years of planning and saving for this project, we'd never be able to afford it," said Deputy Supervisor Hook. "It goes to show the impact that pinching pennies here and there can have. It all adds up and puts us in a position to be able to build this facility that the Town and townspeople deserve and need so much," Hook added.

The Town has nearly $500,000 already put aside for the project. Supervisor Weigelt credits former Town Supervisor Jim Sherman for dedicating much of those funds.

Support for Local Small Business

Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. Not only do they provide jobs and sales tax revenue, they also give back to local organizations and charities like very few large businesses do. It's imperative that we support these small, local businesses and provide them with the best opportunities for success.
Picture
One of the most important ways that we can do that is to make it affordable to do business in Claverack. To that end, we have cut town taxes nearly 16 percent over the last five years!

In addition, we've added a "Business Directory" to the town website to allow residents to find local goods and services and to connect with local small businesses. We've also worked to support new and growing local businesses by ensuring our Town Building Department is responsive to the needs of local entrepreneurs and property owners.

During the recent pandemic, as many area towns saw retractions in economic development, Claverack continued to see new investment and businesses opening.

Make no mistake, Claverack is working and we will continue to do our part to support the small business community!

We've been working hard to make Claverack a clean energy community.
Picture
As a result of our work, including installation of an electric vehicle charging station at the Claverack Library, creation of a benchmarking policy to track and report the energy use of the Town's buildings, conducting energy code training and more, the Town of Claverack has been designated a "Clean Energy Community" by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

This designation resulted in the recent award of $5,000 to the town to be used on a clean energy project. The grant award cited our leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy locally.

Claverack is working.... and doing so in an environmentally friendly way!
