UNANIMOUS BACKING AND SUPPORT FOR THE CLAVERACK REPUBLICAN TEAM!
The Claverack Republican Party unanimously ratified their candidates for local office on Thursday at the Claverack GOP Caucus. At the top of the ticket is Town Supervisor incumbent Kippy Weigelt, who has served the town since 2003.
Stephen “Hookie” Hook was officially nominated for Town Councilman, a position he currently holds where he has been serving as Deputy Town Supervisor. Doug Colwell was also endorsed for Town Councilman, Mary Jeanne Hoose was again chosen for Town Clerk and Tax Collector, and Lou Lamont is running for re-election for the role of Highway Superintendent.
This veteran team, with the new addition of Colwell, has managed to cut taxes in the Town of Claverack for five straight years, a testament to their dedication to strong fiscal management policies. This smart approach also saved the Town from layoffs and furloughs during the COVID-19 pandemic, a feat that other towns were not able to achieve.
The local team’s achievements don’t stop there. Under the leadership of Supervisor Weigelt, the Town of Claverack has been designated a “Clean Energy Community” by the New York State Energy Research and Development agency leading to an award of $5,000 for the town to use on a clean energy project. The hard work on this initiative highlights the Town Board’s dedication to “Progress, not politics.”
Colwell will make an excellent addition to the team, with his strong background in leadership, management and community interaction through his work as a State Trooper and elementary school teacher.
Former Town Councilmember Maryanne Lee chaired the caucus, which was attended by registered Republicans from all areas of the town and village.
"The evening was a great exercise in democracy," said Maryanne Lee. "This team has done such important work for our town. Claverack remains the Claverack we know because of them; their steady hand managing the budget and day-to-day affairs so effectively. It's critically important that we all support their campaign going forward and most importantly that we all vote, and compel our friends, family and neighbors to vote as well," Lee added.
Councilman Brian Keeler, who is not seeking re-election after serving two terms on the Town Council, enthusiastically endorsed the entire ticket citing their experience and non-partisan management style.
"This group works so well, and they manage our town affairs so effectively, because they always put the people first," said Councilman Keeler. "It's not about politics. There's no partisan bickering or agendas. It's simply about Claverack and common sense solutions to the issues that we face. Inclusive, open and fair government. It works so well, and has for so long. We all need to vote in November to ensure it stays that way," Keeler added.
